Prepping for a headshot

Unlike school photos you did as a kid, preparing for a headshot photo shoot requires a little more than just showing up with a comb to fix your hair. Here arer a few tips to help you get the most out of your shoot.

Bring at least two outfits that communicate how you want to be seen. Often this is professional with a suit, but can also be business casual. Try to avoid busy patterns and logos, as they can be distracting. Solid neutrals, black, and white are usually safe bets, but don't be afraid to bring some other things. Bringing things on hangars helps prevent wrinkles.

If you're doing makeup, please arrive with it already done. For professional headshots you typically want a lighter, more natural look, but that's just a rough guideline. Either way, bringing some hairspray, lipstick/gloss and powder can be helpful.

Try to get a good night's rest. You don't want to look like you've been out partying the night before.

The last tip is to leave yourself plenty of time for the shoot. Often the very best images come towards the end after you've had a chance to get used to being in front of the camera and are more relaxed. Feeling rushed will make getting a great shot more difficult.
